I constantly have ideas swimming around in my head about cake design. My Pinterest boards are filled with all types of inspiring things, from coffee tables to couture fashion. This can get a tad-bit overwhelming when trying to figure out where to start a design, so I decided to stop scribbling into my notebook and just dive in. My original idea for this cake was to paint a landscape, but when my sky turned into water, I realized I should just go with it instead of starting over.
After the paint dried, I knew the cake needed something else on top to give some more visual interest, so I added a water lily with a lily pad. While it wasn’t my original idea, I’m actually quite pleased with the way it turned out.
For my second design, I kept the same water theme and twisted it around a bit. It was a nice change of pace to switch from my typical coral/pink/peach color scheme and go straight to the cooler blue tones. I colored a million different icing ‘rocks’ and scattered them on a small six inch round until a pattern formed.
I glued each one on individually, and while it was a pain to get the final pattern perfect, I really love the way it came together. I was going for a river rock theme, but it almost looks like the soft sea glass you find on the beach.
All in all, it was a good week for cake.
